From July 1st 2016 the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will enforce the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) requirements regarding the verification of the gross mass of packed containers.
The amendments to this regulation have substantial impact on operational practices between the parties in the international supply chain involved in the movement of containers by sea.
Checking the weight of containers
Without a verified gross mass the packed container shall not be loaded aboard ship.
The responsibility for obtaining and documenting the Verified Gross Mass of a packed container lies with the shipper.
